"A Healthy Home A Happy Home " by Architect Rosa "Rose" Regala

Hmp.. huwag na lang mabanggit he he he.

We do projects together. This is our project in La Vista a few years back. The photos in this album (tinutukoy ang fb album na naroon ang projects nila) is a series of before and after shots of each area/room, para makita ng tao ang pinanggalingan, at kung paano namin naayos? Itong sa amin transformation from ugly duckling to a grand, decent house. Kapitbahay nila si Gloria Aroyo, as in katabi sa kanan. Gloria would jog around and stop at this house just to admire how it had been transformed? We didn't make it modern, because 'modern' is a temporary state, di ba? he he he."

Ayon sa kay Ar Rosa "Rose" Regala, "Healthy as pertains to a person is more than being in good health, free of disease.

The World Health Organization has broadened the definition to “A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Expanding on the definition above, a Healthy city is a general term that could be taken to mean the general well-being of a group of co-inhabitants, town, neighborhood or populace. It is the condition involving the social, economic, psychological, educational, spiritual, and medical state. All these conditions must be experienced in a positive state, whether cognitively or affectively.

For the WDA Exhibit, we tackle this concept by breaking it down into three main areas of co-habitation: the Home, the Community, and the World.

Where we Live (Home).
A healthy home is a happy home. Characteristics of a Healthy Home:
·       Social – relations between all members of the household are harmonious and uplifting to each other
·       Economic – economically stable – parents have stable jobs/business sufficient to provide for the needs of the family, including provisions for savings
·       Psychological – soundness of mind, eg relating to how the members of the family are able to deal with problems in any area of their household, and how they let it affect the harmony of the family
·       Educational – the kids are enrolled in school, and are secure in the knowledge that their parents will support them in their schoolwork, and their future career decisions.
·       Spiritual – the family believes and abides by a religion, thus ascertaining that their values and moral compass are on the same ground
·       Medical – members of the household are healthy

The Architect's Role:
·       Design a house that:
·       suits the needs and functions of the family
·       ensures harmonious interaction
·       can be adaptive to future needs
·       elevates their quality of life

Down the Town (Community).
A healthy community is a happy community. Characteristics of a Healthy Community.
·       Social – relations between a homeowners/dwellers are harmonious, as well as relations between those who govern (LGU's) / A barangay center is available for holding simple neighborhood functions such as santacruzan, fiestas, town meetings, private functions, etc
·       Economic – the needs of the neighborhood are provided for, and addressed immediately: roads, drainage, flooding, street lamps, peace enforcers, etc
·       Psychological – can the members of the community, whether through the LGU's or as a group, maintain positive level of neighborhood stability? They should be able to provide avenues that may help the individuals in coming up with a solution to their particular problem. Some examples are Job Fairs, Employment Listings, Support group sessions, self defense sessions, Zumba and fitness sessions, and many more. Malls or convenience stores are also important elements of a community that may help promote both social and psychological well being.
·       Educational –  A good neighborhood should have a School system that may serve as a catch basin for the educational needs of the youth. It should also address the  transportation and safety needs of students, among others. Maybe provide a Library to encourage reading, and tutorial provisions and review centers for those who need these services.
·       Spiritual – a whole neighborhood should have Places of Worship, particularly a Catholic Church/parish, as this is the religion of the majority
·       Medical – It is ideal if there is a hospital within the community. In the absence of a hospital, a community center should be made available, which provides cheap (or free) first resort medical assistance to the members of the neighborhood. A drug store should also be accessible.

The Architect's Role:
·       Design the structures that are found within your community that:
·       blend with your community
·       suits the basic needs and level of your community
·       promotes healthy interaction within community members
·       These are your:
·       schools
·       churches/parishes/places of worship
·       community health center/hospital/dental clinics/etc
·       barangay center
·       leisure areas: basketball courts, playgrounds, pocket parks
·       neighborhood malls

Around the World.
As we move out of our homes to engage with our community, we expand our experience. We learn, we serve, we relate. We imbibe what life-wisdom our community offers us. By imbibing, we equip ourselves with the ability to think with a greater depth and breadth about community dynamics. By experiencing we garner the confidence to respond. We gain the necessary tools we need to effectively realize that there is always a need to reconfigure our communities for the better. These tools include education, travel, work, and service.

Eventually, our communities expand to include our city, our country, and other countries as well.

As architects, we are fortunate to have in our arsenal the capacity to view the world in a different way. We see possibilities from the built environment, taking into account the abundance of materials and technology that surrounds. Coupled with professional knowledge, we have the edge of making a change in the physical world. We are taught to practice architecture that is responsive to the surroundings, adaptive to possible future situations, friendly to the environment. Resilient architecture should be not only our aim, but our achievement. In doing so, we bring back solutions to our community, whether they are aware of the existence of the problem or not. We become instrumental in producing a healthy, and happy, city.

Role of the Filipino Architect:
Filipino architects worldwide are doing their part in ensuring a healthy, happy city in other countries. They are instrumental in the design of structures that promote the general well-being of their community abroad. They also have the advantage of having access to technology that is not yet being utilized in the Philippines. Technologies such as more efficient use of lighting, materials, construction technology, and ethical practice of sustainable architecture, which are intrinsic to a healthy city. In turn, they can bring this technology to us through information, knowledge, experience, or actuation. The role of the Filipino Architect is to observe, watch, learn, study, and eventually adhere by implementing this knowledge in their own practices. "
