DOST inks MOU on S&T cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences
Beijing, P.R. of China, 30 September 2019 – Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) President Chunli Bai signed on Monday, 30 September 2019, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between DOST and CAS at the CAS Office, Beijing, P.R. of China.
The MOU signifies both agencies’ intent in pursuing S&T cooperation in the areas of transportation, biomedical devices and tele-medicine, smart cities, high-energy physics, and other areas mutually agreed upon. Activities from these areas will be conducted in the forms of:
- Joint organization of bilateral symposia, joint conferences, trainings, and workshops;
- Exchange of scientists, experts, and researchers;
- Educational programs;
- Joint research and development projects
- Exchange of science and technology information and publications.
Aside from the MOU signing, a delegation from DOST also visited several institutes under CAS that are relevant within the identified areas of cooperation. The delegation led by Undersecretary Guevara visited the Institute of Electrical Engineering where they meet with identified Principal Investigators that conduct researches on lightning detection and renewable energy. In addition, they also visited the Institute of High-Energy Physics and met with the team of Dr. Yifang Wang and discussed their current initiatives on particle physics. The delegation was also able to visit Sugon (Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd.), a leading company in high-performance computing and was a spin-off company from CAS.
The signing of an MOU with CAS is on-top of the current collaboration of the Department with the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. This strategy follows the previous pronouncement of President Duterte to engage collaboration with non-traditional partners. DOST identified China as one of its priority partners. With the signing of this MOU, the Department looks forward to a productive and strengthened STI collaboration for the sustainable development of both nations.
